The Institute of Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies sees itself as an institution that offers expertise in research and analysis of political, social, cultural and economic processes in the countries of the Near and Middle East and Central Asia, as well as Islam to the wider public. This includes the appropriate transfer of academic knowledge and observations into expert knowledge that is relevant for public institutions of the Confederation, the cantons and municipalities, for the high-quality journalism of the public service media and the national daily press and news magazines and for educational institutions.
Expertise mainly pertains to:
- Current social and political processes in the countries of the Near and Middle East and Central Asia (especially Egypt, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan);
- Contemporary interpretations of Islam;
- Background on Islamic traditions;
- Muslim religiousness in Europe in general and Switzerland in particular.
